Traverse: Vehicles from the Outer Rim of Imagination

compiled by Lorin Wood

Designstudio Press

Traverse: Vehicles from the Outer Rim of Imagination is a collection of imaginative science fiction artworks curated by artist and designer Lorin Wood of Gearbox Software. Lorin is best known for the “Nuthin' But Mech” blog he created to share the artwork of robots produced by him and his colleagues. Traverse follows the success of the four books in the Nuthin' But Mech series.

This is a collection of futuristic and fantastic modes of transportation from 51 different artists. They were all encouraged to define a clear narrative for their creations - the vehicles are often shown in front of a stunning backdrop and many pictures are accompanied by a few explanatory paragraphs describing their design concepts and the environments they are pictured in. There is a wide range of transportation types illustrated from futuristic land vehicles and aircraft to impressive spaceships.

Most of the pictures are taken to the edges of the pages. As Traverse is a landscape-format book, these borderless images look particularly impressive when taking up a whole spread. An example is pictured above - the top image shows concept artist and vehicle designer David Knapp’s idea for some classically styled personal transport for the future super-rich. Below that are strikingly coloured spacecraft by Andrew Hodgson who has worked for top studios like ILM and famous IPs including Star Wars and Marvel.

Traverse certainly has an impressive lineup of contributors from a variety of industries including video games, animation, and film. Each is recognised with their own biography at the back of the book which is a great way to learn about artists you have not encountered before. These bios typically include links to the artist’s social media sites and online galleries if you want to learn more.
