Tales of the Space Age

by Lego

"Tales of the Space Age" is one of Lego's artistic sets created for permanent display once constructed. It consists of four art panels (or "Postcards" as Lego refers to them) showing instantly recognisable yet stylised and minimalistic space scenes. Each is 14cm tall by 9cm wide and will stand on a surface as an ornament or can be mounted on the wall with a clever Lego hook at the rear. The panels are:

1) "Cool, Cosmic Travellers" (Blue) - Depicts a comet with its distinctive glowing head and tail formation.

2) "Intergalactic Road Trips" (Orange) - An homage to intrepid space rovers featuring a mountainous Mars-like landscape.

3) "Out of this World" (Purple) - A rocket blasts off in front of a starry background showing the Plough/Big Dipper asterism of Ursa Major.

4) "Into the Unknown" (Green) - A representation of a Black Hole inspired by the famous image produced by the Event Horizon Telescope.

The set was produced as part of the "Lego Ideas" programme that encourages fans to submit their creations that Lego will consider producing if ten thousand or more community members support the idea. It was designed by Polish IT professional and science fiction fan, Jan Woźnica (LEGO ldeas name john _carter). Jan's submission included the first three panels, and the fourth, portraying a mysterious black hole in outer space above a planet's surface, was co-created with Lego to complete the set.

Each panel comes with its own instruction book and has a build time of about thirty minutes. They are all very colourful and can be kept separate or be fixed together to make a single display. The co-created fourth panel, "Out of this World", is possibly less successful than the others. At first glance, this looks more like Saturn viewed from one of its moons rather than a depiction of a black hole (the EHT image was famously orange, not green). Notwithstanding this small gripe, the other three are all very effective and the four panels come together to make a charming set.
