The Cosmic Collection / Luminescent Skies

by Wild Earth Dice

Wild Earth Dice (WED) make beautiful polyhedral dice for tabletop roleplaying games. New designs are often the subject of Kickstarter campaigns and WED likes to experiment with different decorative inclusions. They are currently experimenting with liquid cores which is something I have not seen anywhere else.

The "Cosmic Collection" has a range of six different sets with a space theme. Like famous Hubble and JWST images of the cosmos, these sets are all very colourful and evoke scenes of starscapes, nebulae and various astronomical objects. Space fans will be intrigued by the names of the designs which include "Celestial Maelstrom", "Hyperspace", "Pillars of Creation" (after Hubble's famous image of the Eagle Nebula), "Purple Void Vortex", "Beyond the Stars" and "Lunar Landscape". Each set has six dice: a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and a D20.

Every set of dice is handcrafted and made in a base of resin that is rolled every day. Suspended in this are a range of inclusions which vary per design but can include various lightweight metal foils, glitters, mica, and even real flowers(!) When cast, each die is polished by hand. This process gives slight variations in colour and material suspension and makes each die unique.

The edges on the dice are sharp like casino dice which is a nice quality statement. Rounded corners tend to exaggerate any bias in the dice whereas sharp corners “grab” the felt and assure rolls are truly random. WED do state that the dice are balanced for casual tabletop play using decorative inclusions close in weight to the resin they are suspended in to negate balance problems when rolled. However, because of their decorative nature, they would not be suitable for high-stakes casino-level play.

WED has a new website that offers its full range of dice collections both new and old. Astronomy fans will be delighted to see some other space-themed sets in addition to the Cosmic Collection mentioned above. I was a backer for one of the originals called "Luminescent Skies" which is to be made available again. That set has darkly-hued dice with silver-grey inked numbering and sparkling inclusions that combine to evoke images of starry night skies.
